ToggleAbout Surfing in Langosta, Costa Rica
Surfing in Playa Langosta is the perfect solution for those who are after some high-quality waves in a quiet and non-touristic place. Langosta is located on the north Pacific coast of Costa Rica, right next to Marino Las Baulas National Park. Therefore, the place is tranquil and rich with wildlife. For instance, you will witness big leatherback turtles and other animals hanging out around the beach all day long.
To surf Playa Langosta, you can either stay in town or get there from its big neighbor, Tamarindo. If you stay in Langosta, remember that besides a few luxury homes and several hotels, there is not much to do here. Therefore, the best option is to stay in Tamarindo and just come here to surf. It takes only about a 10-minute drive or 30-minute walk, so it is really no big deal.
What kind of Waves Will You Surf in Langosta?
The quality of the surf in Playa Langosta is one of the best you will find in Costa Rica. In fact, the waves here are always bigger than in Tamarindo and much more challenging as well. The combination of the river and the reef creates a highly shaped wave, which always breaks at the same spot and, therefore, is easy to predict.
Since Langosta is a reef break, it is not recommended for beginners. However, if you are an average surfer and above, you will definitely find great waves at any tide, as well as beautiful barrels, especially early morning.
When coming to surf in Playa Langosta, there is no need to worry about the crowds, especially on weekdays. However, during the weekends, it can get busy, but even then, there are enough waves for everybody.
Surf Spots in Playa Langosta
When surfing in Playa Langosta, you can choose between several different breaks:
Sapo– This spot is located in the northern part of the beach and performs best on big swells during low tide. It breaks over a shallow reef to both the right and left sides and is more suitable for advanced surfers.
Racetracks– you will find this spot in front of Barcelo Hotel. This is a fast right-hand wave that works best during mid-rising tide.
The River Mouth– this A-frame shape wave breaks right in front of Rio San Francisco. The beauty of this break is that it constantly changes and is very unpredictable. The best time to score it is during mid-tide. Watch out for crocodiles around here, as sometimes they come out from the river to the ocean.
The Beach Break– on the southern part, where the reef ends, there are waves breaking over a sandy bottom. However, it is suitable mainly for beginners; the real deal is over the reef.
Surf Seasons in Playa Langosta
Luckily, you can surf in Playa Langosta all year long. This beach is a swell magnet, producing good waves on most days. During the wet season, between May and November, the waves are usually higher. However, in the dry season, between December and April, the surf conditions are better, with clean swells and offshore winds. As always, it depends on the swell; we never know exactly what we will get.
